Rosemarie McCabe BA PhD

Senior Lecturer in Social and Community Psychiatry
Deputy Director of WHO Collaborating Centre for Mental Health Services Development

I research basic and applied aspects of mental health care, with a focus on professional-patient communication. I have a particular interest in conditions in which communication may be affected by a disorder, including psychosis, depression and dementia. My research analyses real clinical consultations to identify social deficits and challenges in communication and translate these findings into novel interventions to improve communication and patient outcomes in mental healthcare. This work has been funded by e.g. the Medical Research Council, the National Institute for Health Research and joint Medical Research Council and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Councils.

Central to my research are interdisciplinary collaborations with e.g. sociology (conversation analysis to analyse communication), computational linguistics (automatic identification of features of communication) and computer science (3D motion capture of nonverbal behaviour) both nationally (e.g., University of Bristol, University College London, University of York) and internationally (Groningen University, University of California Los Angeles, University of Granada, University of Lund, University of Verona).

My teaching has exploited my research programme as a basis for curriculum innovation including novel training for mental health professionals on how to communicate when conducting suicide risk assessment and communication skills in the treatment of psychosis. The latter is currently being implemented with health care professionals in East London NHS Foundation Trust, Barts Health and North East London NHS Foundation Trust. It is also being evaluated in a randomised controlled trial funded by the National Institute for Health Research. This is the first clinical communication training based on real clinical consultations, an innovation which clinicians report as valuable working within the constraints of routine clinical practice. Knowledge transfer to professional bodies in psychiatry and teaching nationally has also been conducted, e.g., Continuing Professional Development podcasts with the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
