Social and Community Psychiatry
About us

The offices of Social and Community Psychiatry are located in the London Borough of Newham. They are based on the site of the Newham Centre for Mental Health. Social and Community Psychiatry (SCP) closely collaborates with local clinical services and has strong international links, particularly across countries in Europe. SCP provides undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and carries out an extensive research programme. It is also involved in a range of service development activities.

The focus of the work is on concepts, methods and practice of social and community psychiatry. This includes historical and epidemiological aspects, evaluation of care in naturalistic and experimental studies, the development and testing of innovative treatment methods, and specific studies on communication and therapeutic relationships.

Core resources of Social and Community Psychiatry are jointly funded through Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, and East London NHS Foundation Trust. Staff core resources are a Professor (Stefan Priebe), a Senior Lecturer (Rosemarie McCabe), and a Research Coordinator/PA (Carolanne Ellis). Additional external resources fund an academic clinical lecturer (Jelena Jankovic till January 2012), a part time statistician (Stephen Bremner) and around 20 further researchers and PhD students. Several clinicians have part time associations with Social and Community Psychiatry. There are close organisational links with the Pragmatic Clinical Trials Unit (Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry), of which Prof. Priebe is the Deputy Director, and the Institute of Psychotrauma (East London NHS Foundation Trust).

Specific research projects are funded by a number of external funding bodies including the Medical Research Council, the Wellcome Trust, the National Institute of Health Research, the Department of Health, and the European Commission. Since 2002 Social and Community Psychiatry has generated more than £8m of competitive external research funding.
