About Us

The Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine, part of Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, is a leader in the field of antenatal screening for Down's syndrome. Professor Sir Nicholas Wald, head of the Wolfson Institute, and colleagues are responsible for many of the advances in screening for Down's syndrome. It was at St Bartholomew's in 1988 that the triple test was first proposed. In 1999 it was Professor Wald and his team who proposed the Integrated test as the most effective method of screening for Down's syndrome.

The Antenatal Screening Service has been providing antenatal screening for Down's syndrome and open neural tube defects to women since 1989. We currently perform approximately 50,000 screening tests a year, making us one of the largest antenatal screening laboratories in the UK.

The Antenatal Screening Service provide screening for a number of NHS Trusts in the UK. For a list of these trusts, please click here. We also provide a private service for women who are not offered their test of choice at their local hospital.

Three screening tests are provided by the Antenatal Screening Service. These are the Integrated test, Quadruple test and Combined test. For more information on these tests, see tests available.

We believe that an essential part of any screening service is an education and training programme for health professionals involved in screening. The Antenatal Screening Service run a number of courses on screening throughout the year, including a three-day course and one-day study day on screening for Down's syndrome. We are also able to provide tailor made training sessions for individual hospital trusts or Primary Care Groups. For more information on the education and training services click here.

We hope you find this website useful. If there is anything that you would like to discuss about screening tests or any of the other services we provide, please don't hesitate to contact us. For details of how to contact us, please click here.
