Centre for Cancer Prevention

Overview of the Centre

The CCP conducts research into the prevention of cancer with particular focus on screening, early detection and chemoprevention. Much of its funding comes from Cancer Research UK.  It is involved in clinical trials and epidemiology and as such its work is essentially collaborative. Activities encompass prevention studies, screening studies, treatment comparisons, prognostic factors and biomarkers for survival, and aetiological studies of risk factors and biomarkers for developing cancer. The centre includes:

The CCP together with the Colorectal Cancer Unit at St Mark’s and the Health Behavioural Unit at UCL, set-up and run the large trial of screening for bowel cancer by means of flexible sigmoidoscopy.

The analysis of data from these projects often requires the development of new mathematical and statistical techniques, and the group has an active interest in the development of new methodology.
